Spending Money – CELTA TP2

In my second CELTA teaching practice, I guided pre-intermediate learners through a listening and speaking lesson on spending money. This topic sparked lively discussions about saving, borrowing, and how we handle money. I’ve now redesigned the lesson for online delivery, and you can try it out in my interactive LearnPress course.

What the lesson covers

In this lesson, students are guided through the following:

  • Listening for gist – identifying the main idea of an audio text.
  • Listening for specific information – finding detailed answers (e.g., what people are saving for).
  • Vocabulary practice – key money words: spender, saving up, borrowing money, special offers.
  • Speaking for fluency – sharing your own money habits and opinions.

Interactivity Highlights

This online version of my CELTA lesson makes use of H5P interactive tools to keep learners engaged:

  • Guess the Answer – quick checks on listening comprehension and predictions.
  • Audio players – listen to short recordings and practise listening for gist and detail.
  • Dialog Cards – practise vocabulary and reinforce key terms about money habits.
  • Audio Recorder – record your own spoken answers to fluency prompts.
  • Drag the Words – test your knowledge of target vocabulary and grammar in context.
  • Multiple Choice Quizzes – review and check your understanding at the end of the lesson.

Why this lesson stands out

In my self-evaluation, I noted how scripting instructions made my lesson clearer and kept breakout rooms running smoothly. That structure now translates beautifully into the online version—making it easy for learners to follow along independently.
