As part of my volunteer work with BookSpring, I helped create an online course to train teachers and librarians in the steps needed to facilitate book distribution as part of the Summer Success program.
Analysis
In conversations with the BookSpring representative tasked with leading the Summer Success program, we learned very quickly that the one hour training offered to librarians and teachers, while essential, was far too time consuming for one person to facilitate in person, particularly given the large number of different schools that had to be visited. We decided that a short, online course could allow teachers and librarians to work through the content in their own time, as well as freeing up BookSpring staff to more effectively serve their clients. BookSpring selected Canvas as the learning management system for delivering the course.
Design
We then worked on creating a detailed outline of what the course would cover. We conceptualized five modules that would allow participants to work through the content in small, easy to manage chunks. See the link below to view the full design plan.
Development
We then developed content directly in Canvas.
Implementation and Evaluation
The plan is to implement the course for the 2020 Summer Success program. As it is the first time the course is running, we expect to make many changes, as the first run is always a learning experience. We have built in opportunities for the participants to provide feedback throughout. That, coupled with our own notes on changes that need to be made, will allow us to effectively evaluate the course and improve it for 2021.
